US Analysis

To evaluate our approach, we prototyped the method in the USA where the 2013 USDA Cropland Data Layer (CDL) was used as a reference training data set for mapping soybean cover within each sample block using Landsat-derived data inputs. The CDL soybean map and an image from the peak of the growing season (r-g- b= NIR, SWIR1, SWIR2) are shown for reference below in the first and second column, respectively. Stacks of three individual Landsat images were used to map soybean for each sample block, with results that best correlated with the CDL displayed in the third column and labeled 3 best Landsat Map. Radiometrically normalized Landsat metrics were also applied individually (local scale) and all at once (national-scale) for soybean mapping of each sample. Metrics which contributed most to the decision tree classification are displayed in r-g- b for the Local and National Metric images and the resulting maps are displayed for each sample block. Each image has been linearly enhanced to facilitate visual interpretation.
